Do I need a bill of sale to sell a car privately?

Some states require one and many don't, but it's worth writing one either way. It records who sold what to whom, for how much and on which date, which protects both sides if there's a question about the sale, the price for sales tax, or a ticket on the car after the sale.

Does a car bill of sale need to be notarized?

In most states, no. A few states require notarization or their own official form, so check your state's motor vehicle agency before the sale.

What should a car bill of sale include?

Both names and addresses, the year, make, model and VIN, the odometer reading, the price, the date of sale, whether the car is sold as is, any other terms such as a loan payoff, and both signatures.

Does a bill of sale replace the title?

No. The seller still has to sign the title over to the buyer, and the mileage disclosure is usually made on the title itself. The bill of sale is a record of the deal that goes with it.
