Before you meet

Ask for the VIN and check it against a history report you ran yourself Ask for a photo of the title; the owner's name should match the seller's ID Ask whether a lender holds the title (a lien must be paid off and released first) Compare the price with similar cars nearby; a price far below market is a warning sign Pick a public place in daylight, and tell someone where you're going

At the car

VIN on the dashboard and door-jamb sticker matches the title and listing Odometer reading matches what the seller said Cold start, test drive, and a look for warning lights, leaks and uneven wear Independent pre-purchase inspection at a shop you chose Service records and both keys

The paperwork

Title is in the seller's name, with no blanks, no other names, no corrections Seller signs the title with the date, price and odometer reading; buyer's name and details filled in Signed bill of sale, one copy each Photo of the signed title and the seller's ID for your records

The payment

No deposit before seeing the car No wire, gift cards or crypto to a stranger No payment or “escrow” website sent to you by the seller Neither of you has to go first: the payment is secured before the keys and title change hands

After the sale (New Jersey)

Pide el VIN y cótejalo con un historial que tú mismo hayas consultado Pide una foto del título; el nombre del dueño debe coincidir con la identificación del vendedor Pregunta si un prestamista tiene el título (el gravamen debe pagarse y liberarse primero) Compara el precio con autos similares cercanos; un precio muy bajo es una señal de alerta Elige un lugar público de día y avisa a alguien dónde vas

Frente al auto

El VIN del tablero y de la puerta coincide con el título y el anuncio El odómetro coincide con lo que dijo el vendedor Arranque en frío, prueba de manejo, luces de advertencia, fugas y desgaste desigual Inspección independiente antes de la compra en un taller que tú elijas Registros de servicio y ambas llaves

Los papeles

El título está a nombre del vendedor, sin espacios en blanco, otros nombres ni correcciones El vendedor firma el título con fecha, precio y odómetro; tus datos completos Contrato de compraventa firmado, una copia cada uno Foto del título firmado y de la identificación del vendedor

El pago

Sin depósito antes de ver el auto Sin transferencias, tarjetas de regalo ni cripto a un desconocido Sin sitios de pago o «escrow» que te envíe el vendedor Ninguno va primero: el pago se asegura antes de que cambien de manos las llaves y el título

Después de la venta (Nueva Jersey)
