How to transfer a car title in New Jersey

The seller signs the title over, the buyer takes it to the MVC with the right forms and fees, and the car is retitled in the buyer's name. Most problems come from a title with blanks, a missing lien release, or a lost title.

For the seller: signing the title

  • Assign the title with the buyer's name and address, the sale date, the price and the odometer reading, then sign it.
  • Only sign over a title that is in your name. If a lender holds it, the loan has to be paid off and the title released first. See our lien guide.
  • Don't hand over a signed title before the payment is secured.
  • Keep a signed bill of sale and a photo of the signed title for your records.
  • Take your plates off before the car leaves. See what to do after you sell.

For the buyer: at the MVC

The MVC's transfer page says a New Jersey or dealer-reassigned title should be transferred within 10 working days of the date of sale to avoid a $25 penalty. Other cases can differ, so ask the MVC if yours isn't a standard one.

If the title is lost

The owner can apply for a duplicate with the Universal Title Application (Form OS/SS-UTA). The MVC lists a $60 fee, says an appointment at a motor vehicle agency is the best route, and says mail can take 8 to 12 weeks. If a lien is on record, the duplicate is mailed to the lienholder, not to the owner. Don't buy a car until the seller has the title in hand. Full steps are in our lost title guide.

Special cases

  • Titled in another state: add Form OS/SS-UTA, and dealer reassignment paperwork if it applies.
  • From a state that doesn't issue titles: a notarized statement or bill of sale, a pencil tracing or photo of the VIN plate and the seller's last registration.
  • Financing the car: the MVC asks for the lienholder's information and Form OS/SS-UTA.
Before you pay

Check that the name on the seller's ID matches the title, the VIN matches the car, and there are no blanks, other people's names or corrections on the title. Pay in a way that doesn't make either of you go first.

Compra y venta privada · Nueva Jersey
