Lost your car title in New Jersey? How to get a duplicate

If you own the car, you can apply to the NJ MVC for a duplicate title. An appointment at a motor vehicle agency is the best route; mail can take 8 to 12 weeks. Selling privately normally means signing the title over, so apply for the duplicate before you list the car.

What you bring

BringNotes
Form OS/SS-UTAUniversal Title Application, online and at agencies
Proof of ownershipA current or expired registration, proof of insurance, or a certified registration record
Driver license copyOne for each owner on the title
Fee$60. At an agency: major credit cards, check, money order or cash. By mail: check or money order payable to NJMVC

Book an appointment

The MVC says an appointment at a motor vehicle agency is the best method. Applying by mail can take 8 to 12 weeks, which is a long time to hold a buyer. For questions, the MVC lists the Duplicate Title Unit at 609-633-8275.

If there's a loan on the car

Along with the usual documents, the MVC asks for a statement from the lienholder with the owner's name, the car's make, year and VIN, and a signed declaration that the lienholder does not have the original title. A duplicate issued while a lien is on record is mailed to the lienholder, not to you. If you're selling a financed car, read our lien payoff guide first.

If you have no proof of ownership

The MVC has a mail-in packet for this case, using Forms OS/SS-130 and OS/SS-UTA with a $60 check or money order. If the car was registered in New Jersey before and your documents are lost, the MVC points to Form OS/SS 130A. Out-of-state residents follow Form OS/SS129. Keep a copy of everything you send.

Why applications get rejected

  • The Form OS/SS-UTA is missing information or signatures.
  • Financing isn't marked satisfied in MVC records, so a lien release letter is needed.
  • The $60 fee is missing.
  • There is no proof of ownership.
  • A driver license copy is missing for one of the owners.
  • The VIN is incomplete.

If the title is damaged rather than lost, bring the original. And don't apply if you know where the original is: the MVC says a fine may apply if you knowingly have it while applying for a duplicate.

If you're the buyer

A seller who says the title is lost or "in the mail" and wants to be paid first is a reason to wait. Ask to see the duplicate in the seller's name, or the appointment, before any money moves. The car isn't yours until the signed title is.

Where DriveLink fits

DriveLink is a marketplace for private car sales where the buyer's payment is protected until the car and signed title change hands. The handover is the keys and the signed title, so if your title is lost, get the duplicate first. It also works on a car you found on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
